(=) Turkey won first WTO appeal against US steel tariffs Recall that US had initially imposed the tariffs of 25% on steel imports from Turkey in March. Then the  authorities doubled tariffs for  Turkey in August which led to Turkey’s request from WTO to review whether the additional tariffs are compatible with the agreement with WTO. The recent news do not mean the tariffs will be displaced at this stage but we welcome the news given it may pave the way for some cut in tariff levels on Turkish imports. Among the listed companies, Kardemir (long steel producer) does not export to US while Erdemir (mainly flat steel producers) exports less than1% of total sales to N.America. Accordingly, there is no direct impact of higher tariffs for Erdemir and Kardemir. On the other hand, some of the customers of Erdemir and the competitors of Kardemir directly export to US. Thus, any cut in the current tariff levels should be welcome for the sector given the increase in the US export may somehow support the domestic prices.

Kazanılan dava, verginin direk azaltılacağı anlamına gelmiyor ancak ilerleyen dönemlerde ABD tarafından tekrar bir düzenlemenin önünü açabilir. Kardemir’in direk ABD’ye ihracatı bulunmuyor, Erdemir’in ise Kuzey Amerika ihracat oranı toplam satışlarının %1’inin altındaydı. Haberin direk etkisi olmasabile, önümüzdeki dönemde vergilerde indirim tekrar ABD ihracatını artırabilir. Bu durum da yurtiçi fiyatları destekleyebilir.
